Casamayor, Corrales, And Throwing Caution To the Wind -written March 7, 2004 by Aaron Sean Bayley Last saturday Erik Morales gave Jesus Chavez a one-sided flogging. The last time I saw someone named Jesus get beat so badly I was watching Mel Gibson's new film. Last night, however, no such beating took place. In their highly anticipated rematch, Diego Corrales and Joel Casamayor opted not to throw caution to the wind and fought a tactical, tentative and sometimes boring sequel to their October 2003 war. Give Corrales credit, though. he spent most of the fight stalking the Cuban champ, who started slow and did a lot of back-pedalling while firing off the occaisonal combination. Both fighters were all too aware of one another's power, having both being dropped in their first encounter. But the intimidation they tried to exude before the fight didn't culminate into fireworks in the ring. Casamayor dropped Corrales with a left in the 10th round, which was definitely the turning point of the fight which thus far looked like a draw. But in the end, the judges liked Corrales' aggression and awarded him a split-decision victory over Casamayor, paving the way for a potential third fight. © 2004 Aaron Bayley |
