Up, Up, And Away: Mayweather Continues To Leap Weight Classes In Fight With Corley -written May 18, 2004 by Aaron Sean Bayley If Roy Jones Jr. is Superman, then call Floyd Mayweather Jr. Superboy. The cocky, talented and quick-fisted "Pretty Boy" has moved up in weight class yet again, this time to fight Demarcus "Chop Chop" Corley at junior welterweight. It's not uncommon for fighters to move up in weight in search of bigger paydays, but Mayweather has graced the lightweight division just once with his presence (a stoppage of hard-hitting Philip N'dou) and will likely do the same at 140 as he continues his steady rise to junior middleweight for a megafight with Oscar De La Hoya, the man trained by his estranged father, Floyd Mayweather Sr. Whether or not that fight will take place (De La Hoya already has said he has no interest in fighting his trainer's son, although Bob Arum, who promotes both Oscar and Mayweather, might have something to say about that) is pure speculation, but for now, Mayweather will have to settle for Corley. Mayweather's last bout versus N'dou was a masterful display of boxing, defence and power, as the Michigan native thrilled the hometown crowd by standing in the centre of the ring and slugging with the South African. Although not a one-punch knockout artist, Mayweather has stopped some good fighters (Diego Corrales, Jesus Chavez, N'dou) and will be going into this fight more confident than he usuallly is. Corley, a southpaw, was outboxed last year against fellow southpaw Zab Judah in an uninspiring, cautious affair which Judah won by decision. Corley did a decent job of handling Judah's speed, but if Mayweather's normally brittle hands are at 100 percent, he may, like in the N'dou fight, try to be the aggressor. Corley, unlike N'dou, is not a big puncher, and so a knockout victory for him is out of the question. And it's hard to imagine him outboxing Mayweather (can ANYONE outbox Mayweather, really?) Look for Mayweather to do what under-achiever Zab Judah couldn't, and that's stop Corley. And look for him to do it inside of eight rounds. Prediction: Mayweather KO 6. © 2004 Aaron Bayley |
