Boxing
Freitas vs. Corrales: Throwing Bombs Or Shooting Blanks?
-written August 4, 2004 by Aaron Sean Bayley

On paper, it just doesn't get any better than this.

Two of the biggest punchers at 130 or 135, Acelino 'Popo' Freitas and Diego 'Chico' Corrales, are scheduled to face eachother on Showtime this Saturday night at the Foxwood Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut. But will it be an all-out war in which they trade knockdowns, or a strategic, cautious affair?

Corrales, 38-2 (31), is a tremendous puncher and at almost six feet tall, a freak of nature for his weight class. However, he is very inconsistent and this will be his first fight at lightweight, and against Freitas extreme caution is merited. In his last two fights he was knocked down a total of three times, both against Cuban Olympian Joel Cassamayor. In their first fight, Corrales was manhandled by Cassamayor and looked so overmatched, the fight ending on a TKO with 'Chico's' mouthpiece gruesomely protruding out of his lip. In their rematch, Corrales suffered a late round knockdown but still eked out a decision victory which did nothing to prove his superiority over the Cuban.

Ideally, we should be talking about Corrales-Cassamayor III, but Corrales was lukewarm to the prospect of a rubber match. Give the man credit though- instead he chose to take on the only other conqueror of Cassamayor in Freitas.

Acelino 'Popo' Freitas, 35-0 (31), is one of those guys who should be more famous than he is. Of course, he couldn't be any bigger in his homeland of Brazil, but the underrated and often criticized Freitas has yet to find acceptance in North America.

That could all change Saturday night, though. Freitas is a consummate boxer-puncher who although has relied a lot more on his boxing lately, can probably afford to abandon his safety-first style more than the fragile-chinned Corrales (who, though dehydrated to make weight, was knocked down five times in a bout with Mayweather Jr). Freitas' chin isn't anything to write home about either, but Corrales makes the Brazilian look like Jake Lamotta.

Corrales seems to think he can capitalize on the fact that Freitas overcommits on his punches and often ends up off-balance, but 'Popo' is such a dangerous puncher that Corrales might end up eating his words, literaly. If the two slug it out, Freitas comes out on top, and if they box- Freitas comes out on top.

Look for the two bomb-throwers to start off slow, studying eachother and looking for weaknesses. Corrales will press the fight, with Freitas landing the bigger punches and forcing Corrales to backpedal. Freitas, after going down himself, will take over the second half of the fight, as 'Chico' unsuccessfully tries to trade with the Brazilian. After knocking Corrales down twice, Freitas flurries and stops him in the 10th round, providing an exciting and climactic finish.

Prediciton: Freitas KO 10.
