'Chico' Is The Man: Corrales Makes Freitas Say 'No Mas'
-written August , 2004 by Aaron Sean Bayley

Well, I said that Diego Corrales would be the aggressor in his fight with Acelino Freitas, and he was. And I said that Corrales would be floored twice before being stopped in the 10th round.

At least I got the numbers right. When it was all said and done at the Foxwood Resort in Ledyard, Connecticut, it was Freitas who went down twice and was TKO'd in the 10th round, or more accurately, quit, after the referee asked him if he wanted to continue. The loss raises questions about the Brazillian's heart and his reluctance to take on quality opponents, which no doubt is reflected in his glossy record of 35-1 (31).

There is no questioning the heart of Diego Corrales, however, who after being down on all three judge's scorecards as late as the 8th round, never stopped stalking Freitas and scored a knockdown in the 8th and 9th rounds, before ending it with a right hand in the 10th round.

Corrales said he was shocked that Freitas quit, but it's not at all shocking that 'Chico' has carried his crippling power up with him to 135, and with his almost six foot frame, who's to say that he can't be successful at 140 or 147? The Columbian-Mexican, now 39-2 (32), says he wants to clean out the division and mentioned a possible fight with Erik Morales. And there's always a rubber match with Joel Cassamayor on the horizon or a revenge match against Floyd Mayweather- a possibility Corrales must be salivating over.

It was clear going into this fight that neither Freitas or Corrales had granite chins. Freitas was knocked down in his last fight with Jorge Barrios while Corrales tasted the canvas three times in his two scraps with Cassamayor, not to mention five times versus Mayweather in January 2001.

But of the two bomb-throwers, it was Corrales who was still standing after his shootout with Acelino Freitas last Saturday night, and while questions and uncertainties arise about 'Popo's' career, there is no questioning that 'Chico' is the man.
