'Hurricane Miguel' Blows Out Pinto In Puerto Rico
-written September 14, 2004 by Aaron Sean Bayley

HBO's Larry Merchant said it best when he stated that after averting a major disaster in Hurricane Ivan, Puerto Rico generated one of its own - 'Hurricane Miguel'.

In front of a capacity crowd at the Jose Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the homeland hero put on a dominant display of boxing skills and power as he stopped fellow unbeaten Keslon Pinto in the 6th round, dropping his record to 20-1 (18). Cotto, 21-0 (17), who was twice beaten by Pinto in the amateurs, admitted to being nervous going into the fight, but controlled the first round and scored a knockdown in the 2nd with a left hook. In the 3rd and 4th rounds, both fighters exchanged big punches but it was the Brazilian who seemed less able to take what Cotto was dishing out. After abandoning his slugging for a stick-and-move style, Pinto appeared to be on his way to actually winning a round in the 5th, that is until Cotto knocked him down late. In the 6th, Cotto hurt Pinto again and flurried, accurately connecting with the brave Brazilian's head and dropping him with a left uppercut-right hand combination. Too big. Too strong. Too good.

On the lone undercard, Tijuana's Antonio Margarito lost a split decision to Daniel Santos after a cut sustained by Margarito due to an accidental clash of heads caused the bout to be halted in the 9th round.

The fight was a see-saw affair with Margarito seemingly taking it to the game southpaw, but in the end the judges gave it to Santos, a native of Puerto Rico. The fight was the first loss in eight years for Margarito, and the second time he was fighting Santos. Their first fight ended in a 3rd round no-contest due to a cut on Margarito's head caused by -you guessed it- an accidental clash of heads.
