Superman Returns: Roy Jones Takes A Tune-Up In Tennessee
-written September 23, 2004 by Aaron Sean Bayley

After getting hit with a handful of kryptonite courtesy of Antonio Tarver's left hand, Roy Jones Jr., the Michael Jordan of boxing, will start his comeback against Jamaican workhorse Glencoffe Johnson tonight in Memphis.

The once seemingly invincible Jones is expected to win decisively, but the sound boxing ability and hunger of Johnson coupled with Jones's lacklustre performances in his last two bouts versus Tarver makes for some interesting speculation, and makes Johnson a very live underdog. Johnson, 40-9-2 (27), finally got a break after continuously getting the short end of the stick with the scorecards when he outpointed previous Jones victim Eric Harding to take his IBF light heavyweight strap. The man who almost quit the sport out of frustration now has an oppurtunity to fight the man who commanded the division for the better part of a decade.

Jones, 49-2 (38), who claims he can't wait to get Tarver back in the ring again, will be in for a tough fight against the Jamaican veteran. It's a given that Jones has the superior skills and hand speed to make the bout a one-sided affair, but the same could've been said for his fights with Tarver, and we all know how those turned out. Jones has to know by now that he can't take any fight lightly, and that if he wants to avoid getting knocked out by someone he deems unworthy of being in the ring with him, then he's got to check his ego at the door and show up in peak physical and mental condition.

For Jones, the fight is about proving he still has it, about the chance of redemption. For Johnson, it's the chance of a lifetime.

Prediction: Jones KO 10
