Mayweather KO's Bruseles in 8th -written January 22, 2005 by Aaron Sean Bayley After his longest stretch of ring inactivity, "Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather made a triumphant return, improving his record to 33-0 (22) with an impressive 8th round TKO of Henry Bruseles last night in Miami. Bruseles, 24, who sparred with fellow Puerto Rican Junior welterweight Miguel Cotto in preparation for the fight, was no match for the quicker, stronger Mayweather, who started out slow but found his groove in the second round, landing lead right hands. In round 3, Mayweather, 27, ran but did enough to take the round. By round 4 he really got cooking, and it was vintage Floyd as he landed jabs and short right hands at will. In round 7, when HBO ringside commentator Jim Lampley asked partner Roy Jones whether he liked the Pittsburgh Steelers or the New England Patriots, Mayweather, who was within hearing distance, turned to Lampley and said "the Patriots". In round 8, in an even more comical instance, Lampley asked "Eagles or Falcons, Floyd?" Mayweather's response - "I like Michael Vick" (the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback). Oh yeah, Mayweather also did some damage amidst talk of SuperBowl favourites with the HBO crew. After backing Bruseles into the ropes, he landed a combination ending with a right hook to the body that sent Bruseles down. Mayweather, now strutting in the centre of the ring, let loose another combination, flooring Bruseles a second time with a left hook to the head. The ring doctor stopped the fight, and Mayweather was victorious once again. He landed 50% of his punches to Bruseles' 27%. While cradling his adorable little daughter, Mayweather told HBO's Larry Merchant that he'd fight either Shane Mosley or Oscar De La Hoya at 147 pounds. But with the way he looked tonight, I'm not sure either one will want to fight him. © 2005 Aaron Bayley |
