"El Feroz" Or "El Finito"?: Is Fernando Vargas Too Washed Up To Rise To The Top?
- written March 24th, 2005 by Aaron S. Bayley

Lately the only thing that's been rising in Fernando Vargas' obstacle-ridden career is his weight. Returning to the ring this Saturday as a middleweight after a back injury kept him out of it for almost a year and a half, Vargas has yet to prove he has the ability to be a pound-for-pound world beater. He may never.

With an impressive record of 24-2 (22), Vargas won a title belt after only 14 professional bouts, but also took on world class opponents Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya, and received a savage beating in both fights, his only two losses. A victory in his comeback fight this Saturday against little-known Raymond Joval will prove just as much as his last two wins over Fitz Vanderpool and Tony Marshall - that is, not much. We know by now that "El Feroz" can outbox and outpunch middle-of-the-pack fighters, but will he ever prove he is not one himself?

Vargas admitted to training and weight problems in the past. He also tested positive for steroids after the De La Hoya loss, but claims it was administered to him without his knowledge. He has parted ways with trainer Buddy McGirt after just one fight. And in the ring, his hot-headedness coupled with a shakey chin do not compliment each other well.

On the positive side, Vargas is still young, hungry and determined. He has heart, but boxing ability as well, and is one of the most beloved Mexican fighters in the sport. Assuming he gets by Joval and remains healthy, he may once again find himself standing opposite world class opposition. But at 160, the Trinidads and De La Hoyas have become Taylors and Hopkins. Whether Vargas can survive his new weight class let alone thrive in it remains to be seen.

Prediction: Vargas KO 7
