Rahman-Barrett Headline Another ... Yawn ... Don King Fight Card
- written August 12th, 2005 by Aaron S. Bayley

Don King's association with boxing's heavyweight division underlines his greed; history shows that the mass media and mainstream are only interested in the big men. Louis, Marciano, Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Tyson - many of the most popular fighters of all-time were heavyweights. But in the drought that's occured since the departure of Lennox Lewis, we've been left with a mediocre batch of relics and only a handful of hopefuls. And with King, who has promoted many memorable heavyweight fights, controlling the heavies, a Don King fight card ain't what it used to be.

This Saturday night at the United Center in Chicago, Hasim "The Rock" Rahman takes on Monte "Two Guns" Barrett in an "interim" fight to decide who will fight Vitali Klitschko for the undisputed heavyweight title. This is actually an intriguing matchup. Rahman, 40-5-1 (33), is invigorated and coming off a sensational knockout of Kali Meehan. Barrett, 31-3 (17), has revitalized his career with two huge wins over dormant prospect Dominick Guinn and Owen Beck. If Rahman shows up in shape, (let's say around 236 lbs), he has the edge. Otherwise, Barrett outhustles him for a decision victory.

Prediction: Rahman KO 4

Also on the card is Andrew Golota, who, after being obliterated by Lamon Brewster in less than a minute in front of his home crowd only a few months ago, has the audacity to show his face at the United Center again. Also, Ricardo Mayorga, who was bludgeoned by Felix Trinidad last year and then retired, somehow is fighting Michele Piccirillo for the WBC super welterweight title although he is not rated and has done nothing to deserve a title shot.

But with WBC president Jose Sulaiman and Don King being pals, nothing is impossible.
