Decisions, Decisions: Barrera, Mosley Win Unanimously At MGM Grand
- written September 18th, 2005 by Aaron S. Bayley

Marco Antonio Barrera and Shane Mosley both won their bouts last night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, amidst a sinister atmosphere in which a fighter on the undercard suffered a brain injury.

Barrera, the "Baby Faced Assasin", improved his record to 61-4 (42) by handling Robbie Peden and taking his meaningless junior lightweight IBF title in the process. The judges scored it 119-109 and 118-108 (twice) for the Mexican warrior. Peden falls to 25-3 (14) with the loss.

Wearing eye-catching green and gold-brown Everlast gloves and fancy trunks which read "Azucar", "Sugar" Shane Mosley beat up the formerly undefeated Jose Luis Cruz and won a 10-round unanimous decision by scores of 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94. The former welterweight champ improves his record to 41-4 (35), but the fact that he couldn't knock out Cruz (or David Estrada in his previous bout) suggest Mosley may be a shot fighter. Cruz suffers his first loss and drops his record to 32-1-2 (27). Mosley said after the fight he felt good and was ready for the 147-pound elite, but he resembled little of the prime "Sugar" Shane, who would have tore apart a fighter like Cruz.

In the first fight of the evening, Jesus Chavez stopped Leavander Johnson in the 11th round with a series of unanswered punches to the head, resulting in Johnson collapsing in his dressing room after the fight and suffering a brain injury. He was taken to hospital, where a coma was induced.
