Mayweather Makes Welterweight Debut Against Mitchell - written November 17th, 2005 by Aaron S. Bayley To put it bluntly, Floyd Mayweather is 34-0 and if he ever loses, it's not going to be against Sharmba Mitchell. Nothing against the slick southpaw Mitchell, but right now, "Pretty Boy" Floyd is boxing's buzz word, the pound-for-pound king and the top of the proverbial food chain, and he appears simply unstoppable. On Saturday night at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon, Mitchell, 56-4 (30), will need to be in top form just to lose a decision. Sure he's a consummate boxer-puncher, with good footwork and decent speed, but guess who's better at those things? Mitchell is 35-years-old, and though he looked good in his technical win over Chris Smith on the Tyson-McBride undercard in June, most remember his obliteration at the hands of Kostya Tszyu in January, when Tszyu was still the 140-pound champ and coming off a long absence from the ring. On top of that, Mitchell has had surgery on his knee and may never again be able to move the way he is going to have to against Mayweather. And if that isn't enough, the diminutive Mitchell is shorter than Mayweather and not a big puncher. At least Arturo Gatti had a puncher's chance; Mitchell's only hope is to outslick the slickest boxer in the game, a daunting task to be sure. What else can be said about Mayweather, 34-0 (23)? His sparkling record speaks for itself. He has wins over Gatti, Diego Corrales, Demarcus Corley, Jose Luis Castillo, Jesus Chavez, Carlos Hernandez, and Angel Manfredy. His determination to remain undefeated comes second only to God and his family, and, as usual, you can be certain he will be firing on all cylinders come Saturday night. Though on paper, Mitchell is a far superior fighter to Gatti and it's hard to visualize him being embarrassed the way "Thunder" was against Mayweather, it isn't so hard to picture Mitchell being pulverized by "Pretty Boy". The fight may start off competitively, but once Mayweather starts finding Mitchell's too-often fragile chin, Mitchell will crumble under the pressure the way he did against Tszyu. A prime Sharmba Mitchell might have given Mayweather a run for his money. The one likely to show up Saturday will most likely find himself mesmerized by his opponent and praying for mercy.
