Corrales Beats Casamayor on the Scales, But Not in the Ring
- written October 8th, 2006 by Aaron S. Bayley

It was a dissapointing fight for anyone who witnessed the first Diego Corrales-Joel Casamayor scrap or the last two bouts Corrales had with Jose Luis Castillo. Not only did Corrales forfeit his lightweight title on the scales when he failed to make weight, he failed to make use of his weight advantage, as Casamayor boxed his way to a rubber match victory in a lacklustre fight at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Casamayor, 34-3-1 (21), outboxed a tentative and lethargic Corrales, and even a disputed knockdown by "Chico" in the 5th round wasn't enough to get Corrales back into a fight which he began losing early on the scorecards. Two judges saw it for the Cuban, 116-112, and 115-113, and a third had it for Corrales, 114-113.

Casamayor proved that he is still one of the most skilled lightweights in the game, and Corrales, 40-4 (33), will probably listen to his body and move up to junior welterweight or even 147. The recent retirement of Brazilian sensation Acelino Freitas means there is one less intriguing fight for both Corrales and Casamayor, who fought Freitas once each. Casamayor lost a disputed decision, while Corrales was on his way to losing a lopsided decision until he stormed back to knock "Popo" down twice late in the fight, forcing the fighter to pull a modern day "no mas".

Besides losing his title, Corrales will lose thousands from his pocketbook for his failure to lose weight.

Somewhere Jose Luis Castillo is smiling.
