Gut Check: Toney vs Peter II Promises More of the Same - written January 5th, 2007 by Aaron S. Bayley Oh, the sacrifices a heavyweight boxer must make. James Toney wolfed down lima beans and fish in order to prepare himself physically for his rematch with Nigerian slugger Samuel Peter Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Facing criticism for keeping in character - that is, showing up in less than stellar condition for the first fight and losing a controversial decision many thought he could have won had he been in better shape - Toney hired Tae Bo guru Billy Blanks (trainer of the Hollywood celebrities) to help him with his nutrition and training. The result? Toney weighed 234 at the weigh in, a pound more than he did in the first fight. Toney, 69-5-3 (43), vows that he his better conditioned and that he will beat Peter convincingly. He looks the same as he did when they first met, but does appear healthier. Peter, 27-1 (22), has slimmed down from 257 libs to 249 lbs, and looks strong and thick. At 26, Peter, despited his crude skills, may be too much for the crafty old-school, 38-year-old veteran. Toney relies less on his feet these days, and was wobbled by Peter in their first encounter. Although Toney landed crisp combinations and has superior hand speed, Peter has fast hands too, and hits harder. That might be the difference this time, in a fight which should play out pretty much the same as the first one. Expect Peter to be the aggressor again, with Toney looking a little more agile as he rolls under the jab and throws the right hand. Peter will continue rabbit punching and trying to rough Toney up, eventually dropping him in the middle rounds. Toney will stay on his feet the rest of the fight and land effective counters, but he will not have enough juice to knock Peter out, and the fight will once again, perhaps controversially, go to the "Nigerian Nightmare".
