Marquez Too Much For Vazquez - written Sunday March 4th, 2007 by Aaron S. Bayley Rafael Marquez broke Rafael Marquez's nose with a straight right hand in the first round, on route to a 7th round stoppage to claim Vazquez's title at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California last night. Despite being dropped by an uppercut in the 3rd, Marquez busted up the ex-champion badly, who complained of not being able to breath properly to his corner. The win improves Marquez's record to 37-3 (33), and makes him the Ring Magazine undisputed featherweight titleholder, an honor shared by past recipients Manny Pacquiao and Marco Antonio Barerra. Vazquez falls to 41-4 (31) with the loss. The anticlimactic finish means that there may be clamours for a rematch, but it is unlikely the result would be any different, as Marquez looked too good for his outclassed opponent. © 2007 Aaron Bayley |
