Cotto Beats Urkal, Ready for Judah
- written Sunday March 4th, 2007 by Aaron S. Bayley

It wan't the dominant performance he was hoping for, but Miguel Cotto dominated Germany's Oktay Urkal with blistering bodyshots before Urkal's corner threw in the towel in the 11th round in San Juan, Puerto Rico's Roberto Clemente Coliseum last night.

The fight, which introduced open scoring in the 4th and 8th rounds, produced an anticlimactic effect which HBO analyst and open scoring critic Jim Lampley pounced on, as it appeared Urkal's corner, knowing he was down on points, opted to end the fight early. It didn't appear Cotto would stop his game opponent, but any chance the veteran Urkal had of finishing the fight was negated by his frustrated corner.

Cotto, 29-0 (24), was hit early and often but seemed unphased as he methodically and robotically dismantled Urkal with left and right hooks to his body. Cotto was bothered by a cut above his left eye which was the result of an unintentional headbutt, which may have stopped him from turning up the pressure against Urkal. In the 10th round, a visibly frustrated Cotto tried to body slam Urkal before the close of the round. Urkal falls to 38-4 (12) with the loss.

Cotto can now concentrate on his June fight with Zab Judah, which will be the tougest fight of his career yet.

In a less than scintillating performance, Edison Miranda won a sloppy 10-round unanimous decision against reluctant Allan Green, despite being dropped in the 8th round by a Green left hook. Miranda, 28-1 (25), rocked Green in the last round and dropped him twice, both times with right hands, as Green was out on his feet and lucky to survive. Green backed up and into the ropes for most of the fight, throwing tentative punches, while Miranda, to his credit, tried to press Green into exchanging. The loss puts Green at 23-1 (16).
